The Emirates Airline designed by Wilkinson Eyre elegantly and effortlessly transports it’s users across the Thames via pod-like cable cars. Ultimately a piece of sculptural engineering, slender white spiralled pylons tower above the reeds and offer a breathtaking yet serene journey across the murky river below.
Blyth’s Wharf in Limehouse, London by Heber-Percy & Parker Architects. Just before the gleaming, garishness of Canary Wharf was this little, understated development on the banks of the Thames. I was struck at how a contemporary terrace of houses could sit so quietly amongst the brash modernity bookended on the Isle of Dogs.

This lovely and contemporary reworking of a house in Kerry, Ireland by Carson & Crushell is an excellent example of how the reuse of a building is far more sustainable than knocking it and replacing it.
The existing bungalow envelope was enveloped in a high performace insulation and render system, before new thermally efficient windows were added. The result is an elegant family home with a considerate rational plan and sympathetic form.
Villa Wallin by Erik Andersson Architects is a contemporary take on a typical holiday house north of Stockholm. The external walls are clad entirely in horizontal timber linings, and these are painted black to compliment the tar felt roof. Internally, the rooms are mostly painted white, in stark contrast to the exterior.

The interior shots of this Islamic Cemetery by Bernardo Bader Achitekts, in Austria, show a sublime and understated building; calmly presenting the sequence of prayer rooms to burial plots and unified by the use of a dusty red tinted concrete.

A brilliant design for a beehive in the US with further images courtesy of Dezeen. The shimmering steel cladding panels have been cut in hexagonal shapes to mimic the honeycomb structure of bee colonies, and the height of the tower lends itself to emphasise the importance of the creatures it hosts.
